How to Add a Watermark to a PDF

Brand your PDFs, mark drafts as confidential, or protect visual content with a custom text or image watermark.

A watermark is more than a visual flourish — it's a practical tool. Marking a document "DRAFT" before it goes into review prevents someone from accidentally treating it as final. Adding your company name to a shared report makes clear where the document originated. Stamping "CONFIDENTIAL" discourages unauthorised distribution. All of this happens in one step.

MakeitPDF's Watermark PDF tool lets you add a text or image watermark across every page of your PDF — with full control over position, opacity, size and angle.

Key takeaways

  • Add text watermarks (e.g. "DRAFT", "CONFIDENTIAL", your company name) or upload a logo image.
  • Control opacity so the watermark is visible without obscuring the document content.
  • Set the angle — diagonal watermarks are harder to crop out than horizontal ones.
  • The watermark is applied to every page and embedded permanently in the downloaded PDF.

Why add a watermark to a PDF?

Watermarks serve several distinct purposes depending on the context:

  • Document status. A "DRAFT" or "FOR REVIEW ONLY" watermark makes the document's stage in a workflow immediately clear — preventing anyone from treating a work-in-progress as final.
  • Branding. Adding a company name, logo or website URL to PDF reports, proposals and presentations ensures your brand travels with every shared copy.
  • Confidentiality. "CONFIDENTIAL" or "NOT FOR DISTRIBUTION" watermarks set expectations before a document is read and create a clear audit trail if copies surface unexpectedly.
  • Copyright protection. Photographers, designers and illustrators add watermarks to PDF portfolios shared for client approval before the final files are delivered.

Watermark settings explained

Getting the watermark settings right matters — too opaque and it obscures the document; too faint and it's easy to miss.

  • Opacity. 20–35% is a good range for most text watermarks — visible but not obstructive. Logos can go slightly higher at 30–50% if the image has enough negative space.
  • Angle. A 45° diagonal is standard for "DRAFT" and "CONFIDENTIAL" marks. Horizontal watermarks at the top or bottom are better for branding purposes.
  • Position. Centre-page diagonal placement is hardest to crop out while sharing. Header/footer placement is subtler and works well for logo branding.
  • Font size. For a full diagonal across an A4 page, a font size of 80–120pt works well. Adjust based on the length of your watermark text.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove a watermark I've added?

A watermark applied with this tool is embedded into the PDF content. It cannot be cleanly removed from the downloaded file — keep the original unwatermarked version for this reason. If you applied a watermark by mistake, re-upload the original and apply the corrected version.

Can I add different watermarks to different pages?

The current tool applies one watermark to all pages. For different watermarks on different pages, you could split the PDF, watermark each section separately, and merge them back together using the Merge PDF tool.

Will the watermark print correctly?

Yes — the watermark is embedded in the page content, not just a screen overlay. It will appear in any print or digital view of the document, at the same position and opacity as in the preview.

Can someone edit the watermark out of the PDF?

A determined person with advanced PDF editing tools could potentially overwrite the watermark area. For high-security protection, combine a watermark with the Protect PDF tool to restrict editing permissions on the file.
